Refreshing and healthy plant-based beverages: Aguas Frescas and Iced Tea

You can prepare countless refreshing beverages loaded with benefits, virtues and wellness using botanical blends or just plants, fresh or dehydrated. To start your preparation you need:

  • Plants or botanical blends of very good quality, ideally organic
  • Water at room temperature filtered
  • A pitcher of at least 1 liter
  • Time

Cold Infusion

Some medicinal properties of plants are lost with the heat of water. Prepare a cold infusion using double the herbs you normally use and leaving them overnight submerged in cold water or at room temperature. It is also ideal for preparing and refreshing in warm climates. For every liter of water use between 15 and 25 grams of plants. We also recommend you make the measurements by eye, feeling and thus relating more closely with the sensory power of the plants.

Iced Tea

We have the mistaken notion that tea is bitter. However it doesn’t have to be. We must always be aware of the infusion time, the water temperature and the amount of tea we use. When we prepare an Iced Tea we can do it based on hot water or cold water. We are going to use double the tea that we use when we drink it hot, because when cold our sensitivity varies, our taste buds are less sensitive. We are also going to seek a balance between the astringency of the Tea, the sweetness and the acidity.

We share with you our recipe for preparing a traditional Iced Tea.

You need:

  • 1 Liter of Water at Room Temperature
  • 20 grams of Black Tea (Sunrise in Bitaco)
  • 4 tablespoons of honey (or more or less according to your taste)
  • Juice of one fresh lemon
  • Steep the tea in water with honey for 8 to 10 hours. Strain it. Add the lemon and serve very cold.

Fresh Water

There are many ways to approach fresh waters. When they have fruits they are usually much lighter and more refreshing than juices and drinks. When they have herbs we try to use fresh herbs, or combine fresh and dried herbs with fruits.

In the case of Jamaica Flower or Hibiscus it can have been prepared well concentrated in decoction beforehand and lightened with water and ice to serve. You can also prepare fresh herbs (e.g. mint, basil or lemongrass) in water at room temperature with slices of cucumber or orange. The options are endless. The invitation is to explore.

These preparations are ideal for refreshing body, mind and soul. Also a great preparation as a refreshment for children.
